Jesus' Ministry of Forgiveness

John 6:48-51
48     I am the bread of life.
49     Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died.
50     But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die.
51     I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

John 8:12
12     Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life."

Rev 8:2-4
2     And I saw the seven angels who stand before God; and seven trumpets were given to them.
3     And another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a golden censer; and much incense was given to him, that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
4     And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel's hand.

Sin Offering

Lev 4:27-31
27     'Now if anyone of the common people sins unintentionally in doing any of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done, and becomes guilty,
28     if his sin, which he has committed is made known to him, then he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without defect, for his sin which he has committed.
29     'And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and slay the sin offering at the place of the burnt offering.
30     'And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering; and all {the rest of} its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar.
31     'Then he shall remove all its fat, just as the fat was removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall offer it up in smoke on the altar for a soothing aroma to the LORD. Thus the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven.

New Sanctuary

Heb 9:1-14

1     Now even the first {covenant} had regulations of divine worship and the earthly sanctuary.
2     For there was a tabernacle prepared, the outer one, in which {were} the lampstand and the table and the sacred bread; this is called the holy place.
3     And behind the second veil, there was a tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies,
4     having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which {was} a golden jar holding the manna, and Aaron's rod which budded, and the tables of the covenant.
5     And above it {were} the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail.
6     Now when these things have been thus prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle, performing the divine worship,
7     but into the second only the high priest {enters} once a year, not without {taking} blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.
8     The Holy Spirit {is} signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed, while the outer tabernacle is still standing,
9     which {is} a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience,
10     since they {relate} only to food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation.
11     But when Christ appeared {as} a high priest of the good things to come, {He entered} through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation;
12     and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
13     For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh,
14     how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Heb 9:23-10:4
23     Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
24     For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a {mere} copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;
25     nor was it that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood not his own.
26     Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
27     And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this {comes} judgment,
28     so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time for salvation without {reference to} sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
10:1     For the Law, since it has {only} a shadow of the good things to come {and} not the very form of things, can never by the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near.
2     Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins?
3     But in those {sacrifices} there is a reminder of sins year by year.
4     For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Heb 10:19-20
19     Since therefore, brethren, we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,
20     by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh,

The Process

Confession

I Jn 1:9
9     If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Sacrifice

1 Pet 2:24
24     and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

Mediation

John 1:29
29     The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

1 Tim 2:5
5     For there is one God, {and} one mediator also between God and men, {the} man Christ Jesus,

John 14:6
6     Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.

Godly Repentance vs Worldly Sorrow

2 Cor 7:10
10     For the sorrow that is according to {the will of} God produces a repentance without regret, {leading} to salvation; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

How to get it

Acts 5:31
31     "He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

2 Pet 3:9
9     The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

David and Bathsheba

Read the story of David and Bathsheba in 2 Samuel Chapters 11 & 12. David commits adultery with Bathsheba and then has her husband, Uriah the Hitite murdered to cover it up. God brings David’s sin before him through Nathan the Prophet.

Psalm 51 is David’s prayer of repentance after his guilt had been brought before him.

Ps 51:1-2
1     Be gracious to me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness; according to the greatness of Thy compassion blot out my transgressions.
2     Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Ps 51:10-12
10     Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11     Do not cast me away from Thy presence, and do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me.
12     Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit.

Luke 22:54-62
54     And having arrested Him, they led Him {away,} and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance.
55     And after they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them.
56     And a certain servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, and looking intently at him, said, "This man was with Him too."
57     But he denied {it,} saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."
58     And a little later, another saw him and said, "You are {one} of them too!" But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"
59     And after about an hour had passed, another man {began} to insist, saying, "Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too."
60     But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." And immediately, while he was still speaking, a cock crowed.
61     And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, "Before a cock crows today, you will deny Me three times."
62      And he went out and wept bitterly.
