The Mark of the Beast
Revelation gives one of the most fearful warnings in the bible to those who worship the beast and have his mark.
Rev 14:9-11
9 And another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or upon his hand,
10 he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.
11 "And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."
Revelation later confirms that the wrath of God will indeed be poured out full strength on those who have received the mark of the beast.
Rev 16:1-2
1 And I heard a loud voice from the temple, saying to the seven angels, "Go and pour out the seven bowls of the wrath of God into the earth."
2 And the first {angel} went and poured out his bowl into the earth; and it became a loathsome and malignant sore upon the men who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.
Where does the mark of the beast come from? We have already established the beast as the Papacy (See "The Beast of Revelation 13" study sheet). We have also established that the lamblike beast of Revelation 13 is the US. The US will establish a religio political power that directs homage to the Papacy and that enforces religious doctrines through civil laws. This power enforces the mark of the beast. Notice that the mark involves the subject of worship. It is not of secular focus. Notice also that the mark is in the forehead, representing understanding, or the hand, representing works.
Rev 13:11-18
11 And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon.
12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed.
13 And he performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men.
14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life.
15 And there was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast might even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed.
16 And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand, or on their forehead,
17 and {he provides} that no one should be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, {either} the name of the beast or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.
The mark of the beast is Satan’s counterfeit of the seal of God. Compare the descriptions above with the descriptions of God’s seal. Note that God’s seal is only in the forehead representing understanding. No one can have the seal of God simply through works, but only through a conscious understanding.
Rev 7:1-3
1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, so that no wind should blow on the earth or on the sea or on any tree.
2 And I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living God; and he cried out with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea,
3 saying, "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the bond-servants of our God on their foreheads."
Rev 9:1-4
1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the key of the pit was given to him.
2 And he opened the pit; and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit.
3 And out of the smoke came forth locusts upon the earth; and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4 And they were told that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
Heb 10:16
16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws upon their heart, and upon their mind I will write them," {He then says}
In the old testament, God included a symbol of His seal in the priests’ clothing relating to the sanctuary system.
Exod 28:36-38
36 "You shall also make a plate of pure gold and shall engrave on it, like the engravings of a seal, 'Holy to the LORD.'
37 "And you shall fasten it on a blue cord, and it shall be on the turban; it shall be at the front of the turban.
38 "And it shall be on Aaron's forehead, and Aaron shall take away the iniquity of the holy things which the sons of Israel consecrate, with regard to all their holy gifts; and it shall always be on his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD.
The real issue between God and Satan is man’s obedience and worship.
Rom 6:16
16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone {as} slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
Mark 7:7-8
7 'But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.'
8 "Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men."
Since obedience and worship is the real issue between God and Satan, let’s take a look at the signs or symbols of their authority (mark of the beast - seal of God) On what basis does God claim the right to man’s obedience and worship? He is the Creator.
Rev 14:6-7
6 And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people;
7 and he said with a loud voice, "Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters."
Rev 4:11
11 "Worthy art Thou, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for Thou didst create all things, and because of Thy will they existed, and were created."
How did God distinguish between himself and false gods? He is the Creator.
Jer 10:11-16
11 Thus you shall say to them, "The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens."
12 {It is} He who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom; and by His understanding He has stretched out the heavens.
13 When He utters His voice, {there is} a tumult of waters in the heavens, and He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, and brings out the wind from His storehouses.
14 Every man is stupid, devoid of knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols; for his molten images are deceitful, and there is no breath in them.
15 They are worthless, a work of mockery; in the time of their punishment they will perish.
16 The portion of Jacob is not like these; for the maker of all is He, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; the LORD of hosts is His name.
Jer 51:15-19
15 {It is} He who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom, and by His understanding He stretched out the heavens.
16 When He utters His voice, {there is} a tumult of waters in the heavens, and He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, and brings forth the wind from His storehouses.
17 All mankind is stupid, devoid of knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his molten images are deceitful, and there is no breath in them.
18 They are worthless, a work of mockery; in the time of their punishment they will perish.
19 The portion of Jacob is not like these; for the maker of all is He, and of the tribe of His inheritance; the LORD of hosts is His name.
What symbol did God give as a memorial of his role as the Creator? Could this be the sign or seal of His authority?
Gen 2:1-3
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts.
2 And by the seventh day God completed His work which He had done; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
Exod 20:8-11
8 "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; {in it} you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
11 "For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
We see that the Sabbath is a symbol of God’s authority as Creator. What else is it a sign of?
Ezek 20:12-21
12 "And also I gave them My sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them.
13 "But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes, and they rejected My ordinances, by which, if a man observes them, he will live; and My sabbaths they greatly profaned. Then I resolved to pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them.
14 "But I acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, before whose sight I had brought them out.
15 "And also I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands,
16 because they rejected My ordinances, and as for My statutes, they did not walk in them; they even profaned My sabbaths, for their heart continually went after their idols.
17 "Yet My eye spared them rather than destroying them, and I did not cause their annihilation in the wilderness.
18 "And I said to their children in the wilderness, 'Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, or keep their ordinances, or defile yourselves with their idols.
19 'I am the LORD your God; walk in My statutes, and keep My ordinances, and observe them.
20 'And sanctify My sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.'
21 "But the children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, nor were they careful to observe My ordinances, by which, {if} a man observes them, he will live; they profaned My sabbaths. So I resolved to pour out My wrath on them, to accomplish My anger against them in the wilderness.
The Sabbath day of the bible is Saturday. This is an undisputed fact by all serious bible scholars. Nowhere in the bible was the solemnity of the Sabbath transferred to Sunday. How did the change take place? The observance of Sunday as the bible sabbath was instituted by the Catholic church. After the Protestant reformation, the Catholic church claimed the Sunday sabbath as the MARK of her ecclesiastical authority because the Protestant churches followed her lead on this subject in opposition to the directives of the bible. Note this but one of many quotes by Catholic authorities on the subject:
"Protestants..accept Sunday rather than Saturday as the day of public worship after the Catholic church made the change...But the Protestant mind does not seem to realize that...in observing Sunday, they are accepting the authority of the spokesman for the church, the Pope." - "Our Sunday Visitor," Feb 5, 1950.
Since the Papacy is the beast power of Revelation 13, and the Catholic church claims Sunday as the mark of its authority, this must be the mark of the beast. It is in direct contradiction to the Sabbath as the seal of God’s authority as Creator and Sanctifier. Note that no one has the mark of the beast until the last days prior to Christ’s return. At that time everyone will know about the Sabbath as a symbol of allegiance and obedience. Those alive when Christ returns will have either made a conscious decision to follow Him (God’s seal in the forehead), or they will have made a conscious decision to follow the Papacy in defiance of God (mark of the beast in the forehead), or they will disregard the issue altogether and follow the Papacy in works rather than in understanding (mark of the beast on the hand).
Does God really care how we worship him if our intentions are pure? See how God dealt with Saul, the first king of Israel. (Note: you can read the whole story in 1 Samuel 15. Only the pertinent part is included here.)
1 Sam 15:17-23
17 And Samuel said, "Is it not true, though you were little in your own eyes, you were {made} the head of the tribes of Israel? And the LORD anointed you king over Israel,
18 and the LORD sent you on a mission, and said, 'Go and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are exterminated.'
19 "Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD, but rushed upon the spoil and did what was evil in the sight of the LORD?"
20 Then Saul said to Samuel, "I did obey the voice of the LORD, and went on the mission on which the LORD sent me, and have brought back Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21 "But the people took {some} of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the choicest of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the LORD your God at Gilgal."
22 And Samuel said, "Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, {And} to heed than the fat of rams.
23 "For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has also rejected you from {being} king."
Saul obeyed God in part. God told him to destroy the Amalekites totally and to bring back no prisoners and no spoils. But Saul took Amalek captive and took some of the best of the sheep and oxen as spoils. Note what they intended to do with the sheep and oxen. They intended to sacrifice them to the Lord. As an act of worship this sound good and logical. But it was NOT what God commanded. As a result of his disobedience, even for the sake of worship, Saul was rejected by God as the king of Israel.
A Sunday Sabbath sounds like a good and logical way to worship Jesus who rose from the dead on that day, but it is NOT what God commanded God commanded a seventh day Sabbath. The real issue is not a day, it is allegiance. 1 Samuel 15:22-23 says, "And Samuel said, "Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, {And} to heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has also rejected you from {being} king." Jesus says in Mark 7:7-8 "But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men. Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men." The Sabbath day is God’s command and the seal of His authority. Sunday sacredness is a tradition of man and is the mark of the beast.
Now, I may be wrong, but what are the implications if I am? Or, I may be right. How would it affect your life?
