Spiritual Israel - God’s People

After God sent the literal Nation of Israel - the sons of Jacob - into in Egypt they forgot the great truths of God’s plan of salvation, being lost among the pagan religious practices of the Egyptions. After God delivered them from he gave to them the sanctuary services in order to reteach his children the lost truths of salvation. All of the aspects of these literal sanctuary services had spiritual significances. The deliverance from in Egypt itself prefigured the later deliverance of God’s people from in sin. Although the spiritual elements were always true, they became apparent as they reached their fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Many of the literal things were symbols of Jesus. The most obvious is probably the lambs that were sacrificed, prefiguring Christ as the Lamb of God and one true Sacrifice. The Levitical priests were also types of Christ in their roles as mediators of forgiveness between God and His people.

God instructed Moses to carefully construct the temple and the ark of the covenant according to a specific plan. This temple was simply a symbol or shadow of the true tabernacle of God.

Heb 9:1-12
1     Now even the first {covenant} had regulations of divine worship and the earthly sanctuary.
2     For there was a tabernacle prepared, the outer one, in which {were} the lampstand and the table and the sacred bread; this is called the holy place.
3     And behind the second veil, there was a tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies,
4     having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which {was} a golden jar holding the manna, and Aaron's rod which budded, and the tables of the covenant.
5     And above it {were} the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail.
6     Now when these things have been thus prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle, performing the divine worship,
7     but into the second only the high priest {enters} once a year, not without {taking} blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.
8     The Holy Spirit {is} signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed, while the outer tabernacle is still standing,
9     which {is} a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience,
10     since they {relate} only to food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation.
11     But when Christ appeared {as} a high priest of the good things to come, {He entered} through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation;
12     and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
(NAS)

Heb 9:23-28
23     Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
24     For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a {mere} copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;
25     nor was it that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood not his own.
26     Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
27     And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this {comes} judgment,
28     so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time for salvation without {reference to} sin, to those who eagerly await Him.

Rev 11:18-19
18     "And the nations were enraged, and Thy wrath came, and the time {came} for the dead to be judged, and {the time} to give their reward to Thy bond-servants the prophets and to the saints and to those who fear Thy name, the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth."
19     And the temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a great hailstorm.

After Jesus died on the cross, worship no longer centered around this literal tabernacle. The sanctuary took on it’s spiritual significance.

John 4:19-24
19     The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
20     "Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you {people} say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship."
21     Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father.
22     "You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23     "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
24     "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

Just as the literal temple and the sanctuary services had a broader spiritual significance, Israel as God’s chosen people has a broader spiritual significance. Israel’s mission as God’s chosen people was to carry the gospel to all the world. Over and over they denied God and failed in this mission. Salvation was never to be solely for the physical descendants of Abraham, but to any who would become sons of Abraham through faith in the promise. Rahab was not an Israelite, but we discover her in the very lineage of Christ and read of her among the heroes of the faith in the 11th chapter of Hebrews. The laws listed in the Pentateuch applied not only to the Israelites but also to the strangers who sojourned among them. Ezekiel reiterates this truth when he prophesies about the deliverance of Israel from the Babylonian captivity.

Ezek 47:22
22     "And it will come about that you shall divide it by lot for an inheritance among yourselves and among the aliens who stay in your midst, who bring forth sons in your midst. And they shall be to you as the native-born among the sons of Israel; they shall be allotted an inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel.

The new testament clearly teaches that all who accept Christ are God’s chosen people in the broader spiritual sense. Jesus also taught that the Gospel flame was to be taken from literal Israel and given to a people who would be faithful to the Gospel commission. In this teaching, Jesus confirmed what was revealed to Daniel the prophet over 500 years before. God told Daniel that as part of the 2300 day (years in prophecy) vision, that 70 weeks (or 490 years) had been determined upon his people, the Jews. This time period began at the decree of King Artaxerxes to rebuild Jerusalem in BC 457. The period ended in AD 34, three and a half years after Christ’s death. At this time, the Gospel commission was taken away from literal Israel and given to Spiritual Israel - Christians. In this year the Jews stoned Stephen, the first Christian martyr. In this year, Paul was converted and took the Gospel message to the Gentiles. In this year, Peter had his vision and took the Gospel message first to the Roman Centurian, and then to all Gentiles.

First look at the prophecy in Daniel.

Dan 9:24-27
24     "Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy {place.}
25     "So you are to know and discern {that} from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince {there will be} seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.
26     "Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end {will come} with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.
27     "And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations {will come} one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate."

Now look at what the new testament has to say about the true chosen people of God and what Jesus taught about the Gospel commission being taken away from the Jews and given over to Christians.

Gal 3:26-29
26     For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27     For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28     There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29     And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.

Matt 21:33-46
33     "Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard and put a wall around it and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a journey.
34     "And when the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce.
35     "And the vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third.
36     "Again he sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them.
37     "But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
38     "But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and seize his inheritance.'
39     "And they took him, and threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
40     "Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?"
41     They said to Him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers, who will pay him the proceeds at the {proper} seasons."
42     Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures, 'The stone which the builders rejected, this became the chief corner {stone;} this came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?
43     "Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and be given to a nation producing the fruit of it.
44     "And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."
45     And when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them.
46     And when they sought to seize Him, they feared the multitudes, because they held Him to be a prophet.

Matt 22:1-14
1     And Jesus answered and spoke to them again in parables, saying,
2     "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king, who gave a wedding feast for his son.
3     "And he sent out his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come.
4     "Again he sent out other slaves saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are {all} butchered and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast."'
5     "But they paid no attention and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business,
6     and the rest seized his slaves and mistreated them and .
7     "But the king was enraged and sent his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and set their city on fire.
8     "Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
9     'Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find {there,} invite to the wedding feast.'
10     "And those slaves went out into the streets, and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests.
11     "But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw there a man not dressed in wedding clothes,
12     and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?' And he was speechless.
13     "Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
14     "For many are called, but few {are} chosen."

Luke 14:16-24
16     But He said to him, "A certain man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many;
17     and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for everything is ready now.'
18     "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, 'I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused.'
19     "And another one said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.'
20     "And another one said, 'I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.'
21     "And the slave came {back} and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, 'Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.'
22     "And the slave said, 'Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.'
23     "And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel {them} to come in, that my house may be filled.
24     'For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste of my dinner.'"

Acts 13:45-47
45     But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and {began} contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming.
46     And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
47     "For thus the Lord has commanded us, 'I have placed You as a light for the Gentiles, that you should bring salvation to the end of the earth

John 1:9-13
9     There was the true light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
10     He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
11     He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.
12     But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, {even} to those who believe in His name,
13     who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Luke 3:8-9
8     "Therefore bring forth fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I say to you that God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
9     "And also the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

Rom 11:17-27
17     But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree,
18     do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, {remember that} it is not you who supports the root, but the root {supports} you.
19     You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in."
20     Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear;
21     for if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will He spare you.
22     Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.
23     And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again.
24     For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more shall these who are the natural {branches} be grafted into their own olive tree?
25     For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery, lest you be wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles has come in;
26     and thus all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will remove ungodliness from Jacob."
27     "And this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins."

Rom 4:12
12     and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.

Rom 4:16
16     For this reason {it is} by faith, that {it might be} in accordance with grace, in order that the promise may be certain to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

Rom 9:6-8
6     But {it is} not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israel who are {descended} from Israel;
7     neither are they all children because they are Abraham's descendants, but: "through Isaac your descendants will be named."
8     That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants.

Gal 3:6-7
6     Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.
7     Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.

Rom 8:14-17
14     For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
15     For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!"
16     The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
17     and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with {Him} in order that we may also be glorified with {Him.}

Eph 3:5-6
5     which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;
6     {to be specific} that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel,

Rev 21:6-7
6     And He said to me, "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.
7     "He who overcomes shall inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.

Rom 2:26-29
26     If therefore the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?
27     And will not he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter {of the Law} and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law?
28     For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly; neither is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.
29     But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.

1 Pet 2:1-10
1     Therefore, putting aside all malice and all guile and hypocrisy and envy and all slander,
2     like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,
3     if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.
4     And coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected by men, but choice and precious in the sight of God,
5     you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6     For {this} is contained in Scripture: "Behold I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner {stone} and he who believes in Him shall not be disappointed."
7     This precious value, then, is for you who believe. But for those who disbelieve, "The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner {stone,}
8     and, "A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this {doom} they were also appointed.
9     But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for {God's} own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
10     for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
